From tableware and coins to cell phones and computers, various metals are used in everyday items that we use without thinking. With the urgent need to move away from fossil fuels as a countermeasure to the climate crisis, renewable energy and electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining popularity, and demand for mineral resources is expected to increase as a raw material for storage batteries.
However, do you know that the mining of these mineral resources is causing environmental problems such as the destruction of precious ecosystems and deforestation, as well as serious human rights violations such as the deprivation of the traditional culture, livelihoods, and lives of the indigenous people who live there?

FoE Japan, together with local residents and NGOs, continues to conduct surveys and make proposals with the aim of resolving the environmental, social, and human rights problems occurring at mineral resource development sites in the Philippines, Indonesia, and other countries where Japanese public institutions and private companies have been involved.
