[Event]From Gas and Coal to Renewable Energy! The Light Night Event for a Brighter Future
You probably suffered from extreme heat and skyrocketing electricity bills this summer.
Did you know that the root cause of the boiling phenomenon of both the temperature and electricity bills is the same? Both are due to fossil fuels. Most of our electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels such as gas, coal, and oil at thermal power plants.
However, burning fossil fuels emits a lot of carbon dioxide, which is a major cause of global warming, and there are calls for a shift away from fossil fuels worldwide.
The price of gas – a fossil fuel- has skyrocketed internationally due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other factors. Japan, which has fallen behind in the phase-out of fossil fuels, still uses gas-fired power for a big part of its electricity, and the rising gas price has caused electricity bills to soar.
If you don’t want to pay high electricity bills due to Japan’s gas dependence, and if you don’t want the summer to get even hotter due to global warming, why don’t you join us in raising your voice to say No Fossil Fuels?
On December 15th, “From Gas and Coal to Renewable Energy! The Light Night Event for a Brighter Future” will be held in front of the National Diet Building in Tokyo.
All participants who pre-register will receive a lightning bracelet and a sticker. On the day of the event, after sunset, the wristbands will transform into light sticks to represent wind and solar power, and to express our protest against Japan for binding Asian people, including Japanese citizens, to fossil fuels.
Japan is promoting fossil fuel infrastructure and related technologies in Japan and throughout Asia, slowing the decarbonization of the entire region. Regional leaders will meet at the ASEAN-Japan Summit, which begins the day after this event, where Japan will promote fossil fuels and related technologies.
But what the people of Asia really want is renewable energy such as solar and wind power, which reduce electricity costs, not expensive Japanese fossil fuel technology. Guests from Southeast Asia will come to Japan to give speeches during the event. Why don’t you join us and take action to get rid of the hot summer and high electricity bills?
