Tokai Daini Nuclear Power
Japan Atomic Power Company’s Tokai Daini Nuclear Power Plant (Tokai Village, Ibaraki Prefecture) is the only nuclear power plant in the Tokyo metropolitan area that has been in operation for over 40 years. There are 960,000 people living within a 30km radius of the Tokai Daini Nuclear Power Plant. A rule, which was established that the operating period of nuclear power plants should be 40 years in principle After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, is not strictly enforced.
The Tokai Daini nuclear power plant was damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami. It took more than three days to bring the plant to a cold shutdown after the loss of external power supply, and it has remained shut down ever since.
FoE Japan is working with citizens in Ibaraki Prefecture and the Tokyo metropolitan area to oppose the restart of the Tokai Daini nuclear power plant.
