MetropolitanCCS
The ‘Metropolitan CCS Project in Chiba’ is a proposed project to capture CO₂ emitted by steel plants and other facilities in Tokyo Bay, transport it via an 80-kilometre pipeline crossing Boso Peninsula, Chiba Prefecture, and store it on the seabed off the coast of Kujukuri beach.
This project involves installation of massive drilling rigs and injection facilities off the coast of Kujukuri to bury the CO₂ underground. Whilst this is set to significantly alter the landscape of this region, which is famous for its beautiful sunrises and sunsets, information disclosure has been inadequate and the project remains largely unknown to local residents. CCS is not a solution to climate crisis. FoE Japan is working to stop the project with local communities.
