Illegal Logging
Illegal logging is one of the most serious threats to forests. Japan has been pointed out by the international community as importing a large amount of “illegally logged” timber. Illegal logging is basically logging done in violation of the laws of the country where the timber is produced, but it also includes illegal activities in timber trade, processing, distribution, import and export. There are cases where illegal logging is legalized against the backdrop of corruption even if it does not meet the legal requirements, and cases where it is far from sustainable forest management, such as violating the rights of indigenous people and disturbing forest ecosystems. FoE Japan is investigating the actual situation of illegal logging in Japan and abroad, and disseminating information widely.
