Webinar: Faces of Impacts: How JBIC and Japan's LNG Financing Harm Communities and the Planet
As the world faces an unprecedented climate crisis, the need to move away from fossil fuels is more urgent than ever. Yet, Japan, through its government-backed Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), is pouring billions of dollars into expanding fossil gas projects, directly undermining global efforts to combat climate change. These projects are not only accelerating global warming but also destroying ecosystems, harming the health and livelihoods of communities, and violating fundamental human rights.
Fossil gas, often referred to as natural gas, is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The science is clear: to avoid catastrophic impacts, we must limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. But the continued expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects, makes achieving this goal nearly impossible.
JBIC is playing a leading role in financing these harmful LNG projects across the globe. In Mozambique, the LNG project for which JBIC has finananced $3.5 billion has displaced thousands of people and caused serious human rights infringements. In the Philippines, JBIC-financed LNG terminals are polluting vital marine ecosystems, endangering the livelihoods of millions who rely on coastal resources, such as fishing. Similar destructive impacts are being felt in countries like Canada, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Australia, Vietnam, and the United States, where JBIC-backed projects are threatening biodiversity, health and way of life of local and indigenous communities.
