The environmental NGO Friends of the Earth Japan (FoE Japan), in cooperation with the NGO Peace Boat, have launched the next in their series of video testimonies of the current situation in Fukushima in various languages.
The tenth instalment in the series, this latest video features an interview with Mr Koike Koichi, who returned to Onami District in Fukushima City. It is being released in English, French, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Korean, German and Spanish, adding to the original Japanese.
"In the morning we would go around and gather, and then that is what we would eat. Not being able to do that any more at all, we have lost a real pleasure, it's terrible."
Mr Koike decided to return to the Onami district of Fukushima City after the yearly radiation level dropped to some extent. Yet radiation levels detected in wild plants and mushrooms are still high.
Mr Koike’s interview takes place in front of the Onami Elementary School in Fukushima City, which was eventually closed despite 100 million JPY having been invested in decontamination. At the initial briefing session, he insisted that decontamination costs should be used to pay instead for the evacuation of the children. But in the end all that happened, was to "allow it to be used for the large contracting companies to make profits."
Please listen to this testimony, to hear the voices and ongoing situation of the community in Fukushima (about 9 mins).
